Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Educated at Stonyhurst and Edinburgh University, Doyle practised medicine for a time and is said to have taken his character, Sherlock Holmes, from a teacher at Edinburgh. He introduced Holmes in his first work of fiction, A Study in Scarlet , in and followed this with numerous short stories concerning Holmes and his adventures in The Strand magazine.
