May 07, David rated it it was amazing Shelves: fantasy , adventure , parallel-world , action. There they plan to find the Great Beast that actually wants to meet them, Mulop the Octopus. However the journey is not going to be easy as the Conquerors have already seized control of the Hundred Isles and the mysterious mole that is giving them secrets.
Will they be able to find Mulop and claim his talisman, or will the Conquerors get one step clo Story: In this adventure we find Conor, Abeke, Rollan, and Meilin with the Greencloaks heading towards Oceanus, which consists of the Hundred Isles. Will they be able to find Mulop and claim his talisman, or will the Conquerors get one step closer in freeing Kovo the Ape?
As the stakes continue to rise no one will be able to leave without great sacrifice. The stories, being geared for a younger audience, might appear fast paced for older audiences. However I still found myself highly entertained by the way so much can be conveyed without overdoing the details. I found myself seeing the Hundred Isles as based off locations like Polynesia and the Philippines.
As we get closer to the series end we see that the story is getting a slightly darker tone, both for the characters and the locations. This may seem kind of ironic or counterintuitive as the Hundred Isles are essentially a tropical paradise that you'd would want to vacation at.
These changes are definitely going to be useful for having the characters develop and grow as they continue to strive to save Erdas. All I'll say is that the ending left me shocked and scarred as the characters. There is no way I'm missing books six and seven. Caution: A boy burns to death after standing on a magic rock for too long. Sharks attack whales and blood is mentioned.
There are battles between people and animals, and it might be intense for some. A boy mentions forcing an animal to do his will and we see the animal with a broken leg.
A girl has a dream where she sees a ruined garden and her dead father, which might scare younger readers. A snake takes control of people. Lessons: The choices we make today can have an effect on future generations, for good or evil. It is wrong to force our wills and desires upon others.
People with Christian backgrounds might want to use Gerathon and Kovo as examples of how the Devil can manipulate people. When we use harmful substances we only hurt ourselves and those around us. Apr 27, Lizzy Bent Bookworm rated it it was amazing Shelves: middle-grade , read-in The series took a HUGE leap forward in intensity with this installment.
I had pretty much decided nothing much would surprise me with it and was just sort of trundling along The ending is a total shocker and cliffhanger unless you are WAY better than I am at picking up on foreshadowing and curveballs. Still nothing inappropriate for middle grade elementary school age readers. Against the Tide is also the first in this series to actually have what I would call quotable lines. There was some humor alongside of all the "OMG" happening, and I actually went and looked up the author's other books because I enjoyed it that much.
Blog Twitter Bloglovin Instagram I finished this book in a day. Dude got serious anger issues by the way.
I wished I hadn't read the series 2 book 1 yet, because Kovo's behavior here is quite different compare to the later book. I'm curious as to what actually changed that. Before I started reading chapter 2, I was curious about what people actually thought about Meilin, so I checked out the wiki fandom and shocked that a lot of people think she is cool and best character in the book.
Usually those who favor her, seemed to hate Abeke for some reason. I don't necessarily agree. I like her fighting skill, her bravery as well as her confidence. But, besides that Meilin is a pain in the arse character. In real life Meilin and I won't get along at all, we will rubbing each other up the wrong way, all the time! As if! Now, some of you will say it's because of the Bile influence, but seriously even before that Meilin does show some sort of an attitude problem and had an air of princess entitlement, like she is better than others.
Maybe she already had that trait a lil in her but was further enhanced when she was under the influence. But that still does not excuse her rude behavior, impatience and ordering people around and oh her option about Jhi as her SA. Abeke, the authors tried a lil to hard to make contrast personality between the two girls. But I think they overdid it, they made Meilin a snobby skilled fighter and Abeke the too nice punching bag friend. Abeke is a gentle and non confrontational character but that in turn made her an easy punching bag for others especially Meilin.
In real life, Meilin and Abeke would be throwing insults and avoiding each other as much as they can. But because this is a children's book, I guess they don't behave how a normal Teen would have behaved. I hated that she always get insulted, mocked and is backing away from having a backbone to defend herself. Basically Abeke lacked audacity to defend herself and standing her ground solid when pushed around.
If the authors had showed some of that, maybe Abeke won't come out as a too goody two shoes. Can I just say, while I appreciated Abeke's compassion and empathy to others, I still wished the race with the orangutan had ended differently. I wished that Abeke was in the lead and almost wining but decided to stop and rescue that baby orangutan instead of being far behind losing the race and stopping to rescue the baby.
You know why?
