Power, Empowerment and Participatory Development: Conceptual Linkages

Practitioners of participatory development are often faced with the challenge of bridging the gap between ideals and what is possible in practice. This article presents ten principles for the practice of participatory development. The principles are offered as an intermediary between the philosophical roots of participatory development theory including feminism, environmentalism, and critical pedagogy and the current practice using tools such as participatory action research, participatory rural appraisal and appropriate technology.

The term is often used by people with different ideological positions, who give it very different meanings Nelson and Wright [4].
