Are water and conflict linked and what actually links them?
Conflict risks around water have increasingly made headlines in the past years. And policy-makers and their advisors have also been vehemently warning of conflicts that will occur around increasingly scarce water resources. Lately, these discourses have also been linked to migration. In the context of the refugee and migration debate especially in Europe, a number of policy-makers have identified natural resources and namely water crises as a key contributor to conflicts and instability, ultimately making people leave their countries. Responses by policy-makers that clearly target the migration dimension of the water conflict nexus include, for instance, the Lake Chad Conference organized in Nigeria and attended by a significant number of high-level policy-makers from Europe in February These alarmist reports try to make us believe that water can be directly linked with insecurity and conflict.
Peace is a concept of societal friendship and harmony in the absence of hostility and violence. In a social sense, peace is commonly used to mean a lack of conflict such as war and freedom from fear of violence between individuals or groups. Throughout history leaders have used peacemaking and diplomacy to establish a certain type of behavioral restraint that has resulted in the establishment of regional peace or economic growth through various forms of agreements or peace treaties. Such behavioral restraint has often resulted in the reduction of conflicts, greater economic interactivity, and consequently substantial prosperity. The Anglo-French term Pes itself comes from the Latin pax , meaning "peace, compact, agreement, treaty of peace, tranquility, absence of hostility, harmony.
In the present state of our world, it is impossible to ignore the hundreds of thousands, or even the millions of refugees - nor the existence of the self-declared Islamic State. Both the migrants streaming into the West and the jihadists of today are the by-products of the current chaotic situation in the Middle East and the broader Middle East and North Africa: they are the result of social unrest, oppressive regimes, lack of economic prospects, unemployment, human rights abuses and also poverty. Within this climate of uncertainty and insecurity, nearly all of these issues can be connected to the shortage of water, or to its control by forces which use this resource as a political weapon and more often than not, as a means to exercise oppressive policy or an expansionist strategy. It is important to mention that over one billion people - or one in seven people - lack access to safe drinking water. In arid and semi-arid regions of the world there has been a rapid decrease in underground water supply. The loss of our groundwater water reserves are staggering.

Add to GoodReads. Water, Peace, and War. Now in an updated edition, this pioneering and authoritative study considers the profound impact of the growing global water crunch on international peace and security as well as possible ways to mitigate the crisis. One sobering fact is that the retail price of bottled water is already higher than the international spot price of crude oil. But unlike oil, water has no substitute, raising the specter of water becoming the next flashpoint for conflict. Water war as a concept may not mesh with the conventional construct of warfare, especially for those who plan with tanks, combat planes, and attack submarines as weapons.
Challenges related to the water situation in Iraq are numerous and complex. While the supply of water from the Euphrates and Tigris rivers is decreasing, water demand is rapidly increasing. The water challenges in Iraq have an interprovincial dimension that has received little attention at the national and international level. Even though the relationship between water and stability is complex and dependent on context, it can be asserted that geographical, legal, economic and socio-political factors impact the likelihood of water-related conflict. How should this urgent and complex crisis be addressed? In this working paper, Water, Peace and Security WPS experts Dorith Kool, Laura Birkman and Bianca Torossian analyze this pressing and under-researched crisis and outline the building blocks to effectively address water-related conflict in Iraq.
Brahma Chellaney. ISBN In recent years, the academic literature has been awash with books focusing on the global water crisis, water wars, water conflicts, and the doom and gloom of environmental degradation. I should not have worried; Chellaney brings his usual astute and critical analysis to the global water crisis with aplomb. I highly recommend this book for those interested in the geopolitics of water issues or those looking for new insights on international water concerns. In this book, Chellaney takes us on an all-encompassing analysis of global water issues, geopolitical battles, and international water politics, sweeping from critical site to critical site, recounting intra-national and international disputes from around the globe.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.
