Network topology is the schematic description of the arrangement of the physical and logical elements of a communication network. Network topology refers to the manner in which the links and nodes of a network are arranged to relate to each other. Topologies are categorized as either physical network topology, which is the physical signal transmission medium, or logical network topology, which refers to the manner in which data travels through the network between devices, independent of physical connection of the devices.

Network Topology is the schematic description of a network arrangement, connecting various nodes sender and receiver through lines of connection. Bus topology is a network type in which every computer and network device is connected to single cable. When it has exactly two endpoints, then it is called Linear Bus topology.

Chapter 5: Topology

Network Topology is the schematic description of a network arrangement, connecting various nodes sender and receiver through lines of connection. Bus topology is a network type in which every computer and network device is connected to single cable. When it has exactly two endpoints, then it is called Linear Bus topology.

It is called ring topology because it forms a ring as each computer is connected to another computer, with the last one connected to the first. Exactly two neighbours for each device. In this type of topology all the computers are connected to a single hub through a cable. This hub is the central node and all others nodes are connected to the central node.

It is a point-to-point connection to other nodes or devices. All the network nodes are connected to each other. In routing, the nodes have a routing logic, as per the network requirements. Like routing logic to direct the data to reach the destination using the shortest distance. Or, routing logic which has information about the broken links, and it avoids those node etc. We can even have routing logic, to re-configure the failed nodes.

In flooding, the same data is transmitted to all the network nodes, hence no routing logic is required. The network is robust, and the its very unlikely to lose the data. But it leads to unwanted load over the network. It has a root node and all other nodes are connected to it forming a hierarchy. It is also called hierarchical topology. It should at least have three levels to the hierarchy. It is two different types of topologies which is a mixture of two or more topologies.

For example if in an office in one department ring topology is used and in another star topology is used, connecting these topologies will result in Hybrid Topology ring topology and star topology.

Compare and Contrast Network Topologies (Star, Mesh, Bus, Hybrid etc)

Network topologies describe the methods in which all the elements of a network are mapped. The topology term refers to both the physical and logical layout of a network. In this network topology tutorial, we will explain: What is Topology? Types of Networking Topologies Two main types of networking topologies are 1 Physical topology 2 Logical topology Physical topology: This type of network is an actual layout of the computer cables and other network devices Logical topology: Logical topology gives insight's about network's physical design. In this method, the network consists of a direct link between two computers.

Network topology is the arrangement of the elements links , nodes , etc. Network topology is the topological [4] structure of a network and may be depicted physically or logically. It is an application of graph theory [3] wherein communicating devices are modeled as nodes and the connections between the devices are modeled as links or lines between the nodes. Physical topology is the placement of the various components of a network e. Distances between nodes, physical interconnections, transmission rates , or signal types may differ between two different networks, yet their logical topologies may be identical.

Types of Network Topology

The physical topology of a network refers to the configuration of cables, computers, and other peripherals. Physical topology should not be confused with logical topology which is the method used to pass information between workstations. Logical topology was discussed in the Protocol chapter.

Network topology is the description of the arrangement of nodes e. No matter how identical two organizations are, no two networks are exactly alike. However, many organizations are relying on well-established network topology models. Network topologies outline how devices are connected together and how data is transmitted from one node to another.

Topology is derived from two Greek words topo and logy, where topo means 'place' and logy means 'study'. In computer networks, a topology is used to explain how a network is physically connected and the logical flow of information in the network. A topology mainly describes how devices are connected and interact with each other using communication links. Network topology defines the layout, virtual shape, or structure of the network, not only physically but also logically.

What Is Network Topology? Best Guide to Types and Diagrams

A network is simply a group of two or more Personal Computers linked together. In a LAN, computers are connected together within a "local" area for example, an office or home. Networks are usually classified using three properties: Topology, Protocols and Architecture.

Computer networking has been around for several decades, which is the backbone of what we all know as the Internet today. The Internet is simply a network of networks, which means there is no such thing as a standalone computer on a network. For a user or host computer to participate in data and resource sharing, it has to be connected to some form of network topology. This has brought about the evolution of computer networking to include more devices, which will further enhance the process of information sharing across different geographical locations. Most people are already familiar with terminologies such as Local Area Networks or LANs , which means the computers are within the same geographical location or building, or Wide Area Networks WANs , which means the devices are separated by geographical distance. With the brief introduction provided above, we simply understand what a basic computer network is all about.

What Is Network Topology?

The configuration, or topology, of a network is key to determining its performance. Network topology is the way a network is arranged, including the physical or logical description of how links and nodes are set up to relate to each other. There are numerous ways a network can be arranged, all with different pros and cons, and some are more useful in certain circumstances than others. Admins have a range of options when it comes to choosing a network topology, and this decision must account for the size and scale of their business, its goals, and budget. Several tasks go into effective network topology management, including configuration management, visual mapping, and general performance monitoring. The key is to understand your objectives and requirements to create and manage the network topology in the right way for your business. Following an in-depth network topology definition, this article will look at the main types of network topologies, their benefits and drawbacks, and considerations for determining which one is best for your business.
