These communities are defined solely by their religion, which, by itself, is presented in a homogenised and non-nuanced way. This perspective, however, ignores the complex history of South Asian society as a tapestry of communities, at times clearly defined, at others overlapping and blurring into one another; sometimes in conflict, but more often in coexistence.

I began my career specializing in South Asian History, specifically relating to colonial India. In recent years, my interests have increasingly become more comparative and global, comparisons and connections involving India, China, and other world regions. I have a joint appointment in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, a unit of which I was the director between and My early scholarship dealt with peasants and agrarian societies under British colonial rule. From the outset, I also sought to pursue social history through the study of law and criminality, my initial foray into that realm concentrating on the ways in which colonial states deployed legal and criminal justice systems to criminalize certain social groups.

According to consensus in modern genetics anatomically modern humans first arrived on the Indian subcontinent from Africa between 73, and 55, years ago. Settled life, which involves the transition from foraging to farming and pastoralism, began in South Asia around 7, BCE. At the site of Mehrgarh , Balochistan , Pakistan , presence can be documented of the domestication of wheat and barley, rapidly followed by that of goats, sheep, and cattle. This civilisation flourished between 2, BCE and BCE in what today is Pakistan and north-western India, and was noted for its urban planning, baked brick houses, elaborate drainage, and water supply. In early second millennium BCE persistent drought caused the population of the Indus Valley to scatter from large urban centres to villages. Around the same time, Indo-Aryan tribes moved into the Punjab from regions further northwest in several waves of migration. The resulting Vedic period was marked by the composition of the Vedas , large collections of hymns of these tribes whose postulated religious culture, through synthesis with the preexisting religious cultures of the subcontinent, gave rise to Hinduism.

In the last twenty years or so there have been great transformations in the historiography of modern South Asia. It would not be too crude an exaggeration to say that no western historian of much intellectual ambition engaged with the subject from James Mill in the early nineteenth century until after the second world war, while Indian historians were little known outside the subcontinent. All that has changed. Highly innovative work that commands the attention of all historians, not merely of regional specialists, is now done on modern South Asia. This work comes out of Indian and western universities, where scholars from South Asia, like Sugata Bose and Ayesha Jalal, play a very prominent role.
