Redistribution of income and wealth

Redistribution of income and wealth is the transfer of income and wealth including physical property from some individuals to others by means of a social mechanism such as taxation , charity , welfare , public services , land reform , monetary policies , confiscation , divorce or tort law. Interpretations of the phrase vary, depending on personal perspectives, political ideologies and the selective use of statistics. Occasionally, however, it is used to describe laws or policies that cause opposite redistributions that shift monetary burdens from wealthy to low-income individuals. The phrase is often coupled with the term " class warfare ", with high income earners and the wealthy portrayed as victims of unfairness and discrimination. Redistribution tax policy should not be confused with predistribution policies.

Major depression is a leading contributor to the global burden of disease. Progress in this area requires valid animal models. Current models are based either on manipulating the environment to which rodents are exposed during the developmental period or adulthood or biological underpinnings i. These manipulations can alter specific behavioural and biological outcomes that can be related to different symptomatic and pathophysiological dimensions of major depression. However, animal models of major depression display substantial shortcomings that contribute to the lack of innovative pharmacological approaches in recent decades and which hamper our capabilities to investigate treatment-resistant depression.
