The Home of the Last Tsar - Romanov and Russian History
He had had one idea instilled into him above all others-that of the omnipotence of the Tsars of Russia, and of the consequent necessity of maintaining the prestige of the Imperial authority. On this latter point the tradition inherited from his august father and his grandfather Nicholas I was maintained in its full grandeur and integrity. The doctrine was continually impressed on the future Emperor that the Russian Tsars are the masters whom God has willed to bestow on Holy Russia in her boundless immensity. The Tsar was his Country's guardian and a symbol of the national unity: he must stand forth as the last rampart of paternal benevolence and chivalrous justice. Alexander's mother had taught him to hold in high honour the ideas of marriage and the family. She had, of course, been equally concerned that on its social side her son's education should produce a docile submission to all the rigours of etiquette and ceremonial.

The Last of the Tsars: Nicholas II and the Russian Revolution
Within them, it was the middle of the first year of the Russian Civil War, and the Romanovs had to be killed in order to prevent them from falling into the hands of an approaching White army composed mostly of Czechoslovak POWs on their way to Vladivostok. Disposing of the corpses proved, however, far more difficult. The following morning, the exhausted men dug the putrefying corpses back up, loaded them back into the truck, and drove them off into the forest on a ghoulish mission to find somewhere better to hide them from the Whites. In sheer desperation, they buried them in a shallow and hastily-dug grave in a boggy section of the road through the forest where their truck was temporarily stuck, cunningly covering it with railway sleepers to make it look like a purely pragmatic track through the mud. Remarkably, it worked.
The insane Protopopov, Minister of the Interior, seized upon the death of Rasputin to increase his influence and consolidate his position with the Tsarina. He announced that the spirit of the martyred prophet had descended upon him; he had visions and went into ecstasy in public; at times, when conversing with the Empress, he would suddenly pause and point dramatically to the empty space behind her, saying that Rasputin was there hovering over them. At other times he would see Christ blessing the Empress and confirming her political wisdom. But this riot of fantasy, this coinage of a disordered brain, did not impair the exercise of a shrewd wit. It is said that he had his agents compose letters of a flattering nature and mail them from different parts of Russia to the Empress. In these forged epistles the writers, simulating the style and the common errors of peasants, praised the Empress for her devotion to a holy cause and exhorted her to stand fast in her policy.
Alexandra Feodorovna 6 June [ O. Originally Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine at birth, she was given the name and patronymic Alexandra Feodorovna when she converted and was received into the Russian Orthodox Church. She and her immediate family were all killed while in Bolshevik captivity in , during the Russian Revolution. A favourite granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom , Alexandra was, like her grandmother, one of the most famous royal carriers of the disease of haemophilia. She bore a hemophiliac heir, Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsesarevich of Russia. Her reputation for encouraging her husband's resistance to the surrender of autocratic authority and her known faith in the Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin severely damaged her popularity and that of the Romanov monarchy in its final years. Alexandra was a noted beauty.
