Martin wrote this book to analyse the sudden and rapid decline of the Roman Catholic Church in its ecclesiastical organization and doctrinal unity since the Second Vatican Council — Martin shows the transformations that took place in the institution of the papacy as the relationship between temporal power and spiritual authority was worked out throughout the years. Martin tells how the early popes were chosen, including how many were appointed by secular rulers until the invention of the conclave. The Pius XII chapter contains information on both the pope's encounter with Marxism and his visionary life. The book was translated into Spanish, French and German. Reviews of the book noted its controversial character.

Suddenly the Church, which had been concerned strictly with man's soul, found itself ruler of the known world. Since that day, the Church's dilemma has always been to what extent it should serve mankind's spiritual needsand to what extent it should be involved in the power and politics of secular life. Today, this conict has reached crisis proportions, and in this, his controversial and provocative successor to the best-selling The Final Conclave, Malachi Martin traces the tragic schism in the Church from its historic roots. The change he inaugurated was at least as great as the one Constantine intro duceda liberalism that has had the unex pected result of destroying the authority of the Church and the morality of the people, and of hurling it toward Communism. In the sixties and seventies, after Roncalli's death, they drew these conclusions and abandoned belief in Original Sin, in the Devil, and in many other fundamental doctrines.
