Indeed, the unexpected renewed interest in myths and legends that had been run down during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was soon to be followed by a renewed craze for tales of enchantment that approached the world, accounted for human relationships and explored the human psyche and the collective unconscious from a radically non-rational perspective. In this way, they revolutionized the form and content of the fairy tale.

Oscar Wilde's unconventional life began with an equally unconventional family. His father, Sir William Wilde, was an eminent Victorian and a doctor of aural surgery. Wilde's mother, Jane Francesca Elgee or Lady Wilde , saw herself as a revolutionary and liked to trace her family through the Italian line of Alighieris, including Dante. An Irish nationalist, she wrote under the pen name Speranza. She attracted artists like herself and established a literary salon devoted to intellectual and artistic conversations of the day, through which Lady Wilde brought literature, an interest in art and culture, and an elegance and appreciation for wit into the lives of her children.

Oscar Wilde had often spoken of his belief that, in artistic matters, style outweighed sincerity or substance. As such, in his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray , his attention was therefore paid to form and the nuances of wording in his novel. Oscar Wilde had a phenomenal ability to incorporate aspects of both fantasy and realism into his works. Through thoughtful imagery and realistic dialect, he successfully merged two contradicting genres into a fascinatingly morbid tale.

Neil Sammells- This new study of the major prose and plays of Oscar Wilde argues that his dominant aesthetic category is not art but style. Writer Oscar Wilde is sent to prison after being convicted of sodomy. His talk is lost, his autobiography was never written, but his letters reveal him at his spontaneous, sparkling best. Red dust jacket over red cloth. Rarely have we read such outr and flamboyant style, whether in fashion or in letters, as that of the irrepressible Oscar Wilde as subversion, rebellion against normalcy, and as an indictment against intolerance.

In fact, throughout Wilde Style, Sammells argues that some of the styles of Wilde that we now consider pedestrian or outlandish, such as his use of the fairy tale genre, his appropriation of the society comedy conventions and finally, his dandyism, were elaborately constructed rebellions against the norms of classicism, sexism, racism, and homophobia rampant in England during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Sammells contends that Wilde was not, as others have argued, working against one dominant stereotype against homosexuals, for instance ; he was, instead, challenging most of the dominant stereotypes prevalent in English society. Sammells's use of differing disciplines of criticism, particularly pop culture criticism and Irish Studies, show him to be a thorough and careful scholar--though too often this text becomes mired in the scholarship of other critics, causing Sammells's own point to become overshadowed.
