From time to time, I've noticed that a play called Over the River and Through the Woods is being presented by some community theater that's known for sticking to very traditional, family-friendly musicals and comedies. We have more than one theater like that in the Valley. And the title's made me think that it might not have a lot to offer, and then I'd find something that sounded more interesting to see for you that week. The title's also led me to assume that the action takes place around Thanksgiving.

George Musical Theater through April 8. The title truly is unfortunate. It is, however, a play about family relationships, focusing on Nick, a young man, and his four grandparents. Similarly, any grandparents in the audience will recognize some of the concerns felt by the grandparents. This is, after all, also a play about goodbyes. And therein lies its poignancy. The character stereotypes are greatly exaggerated.

Over the river and through the wood, to Grandmother's house we go; the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow. Over the river and through the wood— oh, how the wind does blow! It stings the toes and bites the nose, as over the ground we go. Over the river and through the wood, with a clear blue winter sky. The dogs do bark and the children hark, as we go jingling by.

Over The River And Through The Woods
Nick is a young, carefree bachelor in New Jersey who spends nearly every Sunday afternoon visiting and dining with either of his two sets of grandparents, who are ethnic Italians. One Thursday he makes an unscheduled visit to announce that his corporate employer will be promoting and relocating him to Seattle, Washington in a few months. His grandparents are shocked, and dedicate themselves to making Nick stay. Without telling him, they invite a young Irish woman named Catlin to join them at the next dinner, hoping the two will bond and Nick will remain in the area. Instead, they embarrass Nick in front of her, causing Nick to repeatedly snap at them. This disgusts Catlin, and following her departure Nick yells at his grandparents, berating them at their attempts to control his life. The scene climaxes with Nick having a panic attack at the result of the stress.

Drama students from Austin High School took home the state championship trophy at the University Interscholastic League one-act play competition this month — the first time since that a group from Austin High has won the contest, which now involves 14, students from across the state. Five members of the six-person cast also won individual awards for acting. The students performed "Over the River and Through the Woods," a one-act play by writer Joe DiPietro about grandparents who try to stop their grandson from moving away. This was a great way to go out.
The title of the play comes from a popular song that Americans sing around Thanksgiving and Christmas. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow. Since Nick is their only relative left in the area, the thought of losing him calls for drastic action on the part of the grandparents. The solution? Introduce him to the woman of his dreams. So, one day, Caitlin O'Hare comes to dinner.
