File Name: african cities and towns before the european conquest writer.zip
The history of Africa begins with the emergence of hominids , archaic humans and—at least , years ago— anatomically modern humans Homo sapiens , in East Africa , and continues unbroken into the present as a patchwork of diverse and politically developing nation states. Following the desertification of the Sahara , North African history became entwined with the Middle East and Southern Europe while the Bantu expansion swept from modern day Cameroon Central Africa across much of the sub-Saharan continent in waves between around BC and 1 AD , creating a linguistic commonality across much of the central and Southern continent. At its peak, prior to European colonialism , it is estimated that Africa had up to 10, different states and autonomous groups with distinct languages and customs.

The Portuguese had been sailing the coasts of Morocco and Western Sahara since , when they captured the Moroccan city of Ceuta [still a Spanish city today]. For the next years, West African rulers and traders came across the Portuguese more than any other European nation. In the beginning, the Portuguese main motivations were: 1, an interest in the extensive gold production of Bono-Mansu and the Akan states; 2, competition with the Ottoman Empire to access this gold [the Ottomans had captured Constantinople in , prompting a crisis in Christian Europe]; 3, the desire to find a trade route to markets in India around the Cape of Good Hope; 4, ever increasingly, the trade in enslaved persons.
First contact experiences on Hispaniola included brutal interactions between the Spanish and the Native Americans. Conquistadors subjugated populations primarily to garner personal economic wealth, and Natives little understood the nature of the conquest. As early as Bartolome de Las Casas worked to denounce these activities on political, economic, moral, and religious grounds by chronicling the actions of the conquistadors for the Spanish court. For more information on text complexity see these resources from achievethecore. In the Text Analysis section, Tier 2 vocabulary words are defined in pop-ups, and Tier 3 words are explained in brackets. Using excerpts from A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies , published in , students will explore in this lesson how Bartolome de Las Casas — argued for more humane treatment of Native Americans in the Spanish New World colonies. In the next three excerpts students will investigate the Spanish presence in a specific Hispaniola kingdom, Magua.
However, even before the rise of Kemet it seems likely that an even more ancient kingdom, known as Ta Seti, existed in what is today Nubia in Sudan. This may well have been the earliest state to exist anywhere in the world. Africa can therefore be credited not only with giving rise to the many scientific developments associated with Egypt, engineering, mathematics, architecture, medicine etc but also with important early political developments such as state formation and monarchy. This demonstrates that economic and political development, as well as scientific development was, during this early period, perhaps more advanced in Africa than in other continents. The African continent continued on its own path of development, without significant external intervention until the fifteenth century of our era. In this early period Africans participated in extensive international trading networks and in trans-oceanic travel. Certainly some African states had established important trading relations with India, China and other parts of Asia long before these were disrupted by European intervention.
Africa before Transatlantic Enslavement
We investigate the role of deeply-rooted pre-colonial ethnic institutions in shaping comparative regional development within African countries. We combine information on the spatial distribution of ethnicities before colonization with regional variation in contemporary economic performance, as proxied by satellite images of light density at night. We document a strong association between pre-colonial ethnic political centralization and regional development. This pattern is not driven by differences in local geographic features or by other observable ethnic-specific cultural and economic variables. The strong positive association between pre-colonial political complexity and contemporary development obtains also within pairs of adjacent ethnic homelands with different legacies of pre-colonial political institutions. There has been ample research on the institutional origins of African under development both in economics and the broader literature in social sciences; yet the two strands have followed somewhat different paths.
