Arbitrary Stupid Goal

They felt so thin and fragile and useless, her hands. Her heart sank by degrees with each passing moment, from shock to disgust to fear to despair to self-loathing to an all-consuming desire to die, just to escape the screaming. Tears poured down her cheeks as she pounded on the door, and she moaned wordless prayers for silence, for darkness, for sunlight, for death, for anything but the fiery chamber of screaming faces. The two women spun out into the cold, empty air and Wren had a brief glimpse of the blinding white snow before she struck the ground and lost consciousness. Gradually she blinked away the pain and looked across the bright white snow and ice at the old woman lying beside her.

A smile spread across his face when he saw the love of his life sleeping on the floor. She throws you out and you run to a bottle. The launcher made only a small puff when the bombs were fired, and Nix had gone with her several times. Harder, he knew, lifted the lid of the tank, or else the blood on my clothes would have dried by now. He has been all but a son to me.

After school I would pore over its throwback recipes, dog-earing pages, scribbling notes, and pretty much doing everything except actually cooking from it. Nobody cooks from cookbooks anymore , goes the refrain. Does that make me impatient and a poor planner? Sure, but most of us are. The real issue, I think, is that most cookbooks give you a list of things to cook rather than a framework on how to cook.

Kenny Shopsin, Owner of Shopsin’s General Store, Has Died

I Like Killing Flies is a documentary film produced, directed, filmed, and edited by Matt Mahurin. In and , Mahurin followed Shopsin in his final year at the location he ran for over 30 years. Throughout the film, Shopsin offers what he calls "half-baked" philosophy, peppered with profanities. In the first half, Shopsin opens his eatery for the day and talks about his kitchen, his business, his employees, and his customers. We meet the regulars and friends who eat some of the eclectic dishes he prepares, and we learn the rules of the restaurant: all customers must eat, parties of four or more are unwelcome, and anyone who irritates the owner will be swiftly shown the door.

I loved the thread about Shopsin's , and the interesting thing is that every commenter is right on some level. I have known Kenny Shopsin for 25 years, and he is profane, unreasonable, more than occasionally rude, charming, funny, and totally ridiculous—sometimes all simultaneously. He's also a really good cook who can make me laugh, even while insulting me. Does that make me a masochist? I don't think so.

Look Inside. These are extra decadent, but in a way, every pancake is a Ho Cake. His rants—on everything from how the customer is not always right to the art of griddling; from how to run a small, ethical, and humane business to how we all should learn to cook in a Goodnight Moon world where everything you need is already in your own home and head—will leave you stunned or laughing or hungry. Or all of the above. Kenny Shopsin was a self-taught chef who has developed his own inimitable style: he colored outside of the lines and… More about Kenny Shopsin.
