This is not apropos of anything in particular and not in any way conclusive, but I recently re-read sociologist Georg Simmel's essay "The Metropolis and Mental Life" pdf and thought of a few things that seemed worth mentioning. That is to say a marked-up printout of it has been sitting by computer for a week or so now, and I want to be able to put it away.

This thesis aims to study the specific theme of insecurity and its spatial manifestation as walls, fences and related physical objects and electronic accessories of division that create and enhance spatial divisions, as well as restrict access to homes, buildings, and installations in the twentieth century metropolis. To that end, the primary exploration of the thesis revolves around the semiotic and psychological experiences of the individual that arises from his interaction with the visual aspects of elements of spatial division such as gates, fences, surveillance mechanisms and walls. How does the shared cognitive outlook of fear that arises from such experiences influence the conceptualization of public space in the city? How does the conceptualization of the contemporary city as an idea rooted in the production and consumption of space inform urban spatial expression? If applicable, what are the limitations of such analogies as reflected in the writings under investigations. If not applicable, what are the possible common denominators of the ideas of insecurity in the writings. Search ETDs:.

The deepest problems of modern life derive from the claim of the individual to preserve the autonomy and individuality of his existence in the face of overwhelming social forces, of historical heritage, of external culture, and of the technique of life. The fight with nature which primitive man has to wage for his bodily existence attains in this modern form its latest transformation. View via Publisher.

Since we are recognizing more and more the relationship between mental health and environment, and since the majority of Americans now live in metropolitan areas, a study of urban problems is clearly relevant to mental health problems. This book is one product of the long-range interdisciplinary study of varied aspects of city life, sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health. Only a few of the authors are physicians, but they all—biologists, political scientists, lawyers, and even a landscape architect—have something to offer the physician who seeks to understand how the problems of urban living affect his patients. Although the 29 diverse papers cover a wide range, from the feelings of Puerto Rican slum dwellers about their homes to the behavior of rats in crowded cages, and from case histories to theoretical discussions of simulated models, there is a basic unity of attitude and goal. The authors have worked and.

Recent research on the social determinants of mental ill health has identified correlations between social disadvantage and mental disorder, but attempts to identify the pertinent dimensions of adversity have proved inconclusive. Many have pointed to the evidence that those living in cities are more likely to be diagnosed with mild, moderate and severe mental disorders than those living in rural settings. But it has proved difficult to identify precisely what it is in the urban experience that leads to these elevated rates. Some rates are elevated in some migrants, sometimes only in the second generation, but the findings are equivocal, and migration itself does not seem to be a consistent causal factor for mental ill health — indeed sometimes quite the reverse. Can we link biomedical explanations with sociological and anthropological research to understand the ways in which the experiences of poverty, inequality, precarity, gender discrimination, racism, stigma, social exclusion, isolation, threat and violence lead many to mental distress? If we understood these mechanisms better would we be better able to advise on policies to mitigate mental distress in urban environments and on practices likely to promote recovery?
