It will be important, however, to compare the elements against other elements that have been developed. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills identified a number of skills that should be considered in a review of the initial framework for ICT literacy. These include: self-direction, interpersonal skills, accountability and adaptability, and social responsibility.

Technologies used in many modern classrooms allow teachers to move beyond the traditional textbook by using primary sources, demonstrate abstract concepts in ways students can grasp, bring the microscopic world to the human eye, simulate processes that could not be otherwise demonstrated, bring people from distant places into the classroom, take st udents, virtually, to a lmost anywhere, allow students to collaborate with others in their class, in another state or another country. Technologies available to our teachers and students open the door to anytime and anywhere access to our curric ulum, to each other, and should compel us to change the nature of the questions we ask students to answer. It gives teachers the opportunity to assist students, who have the technology in their hands to reach out to the world, to understand that with that unprecedented power comes responsibility. The widespread availability of information and communication technologies ICTs has generated new activity contexts that provide opportunities and resources for learning, at the same time as expanding the learning potential of traditional contexts such as the family and schools. Within this framework the present study analyses the frequency with which students of three ages 10, 13 and 16 years participate in ICT-mediated activities outside school, as well as the learning experiences associated with this participation. To this end, we used a multimethod approach combining administration of a questionnaire with focus groups and individual interviews. The analysis revealed low rates of participation in ICT-mediated activities outside school and showed that these activities were associated with limited learning experiences. Arnseth, H. This is part of a growing international movement focusing on the skills required for students to master in preparation for success in a rapidly changing, digital society. Many of these skills are also associated with deeper learning , which is based on mastering skills such as analytic reasoning , complex problem solving , and teamwork. These skills differ from traditional academic skills in that they are not primarily content knowledge-based. During the latter decades of the 20th century and into the 21st century, society has undergone an accelerating pace of change in economy and technology. Its effects on the workplace , and thus on the demands on the educational system preparing students for the workforce , have been significant in several ways.
