All plants and animals must have water to survive.

Water Use and Stress

A growing global population and economic shift towards more resource-intensive consumption patterns means global freshwater use — that is, freshwater withdrawals for agriculture, industry and municipal uses — has increased nearly six-fold since This is shown in the chart. Rates of global freshwater use increased sharply from the s onwards, but since appears to be plateauing, or at least slowing. Although absolute freshwater use has growth over this period, the distribution of uses between these regional groupings have not changed significantly over the last century; OECD nations use approximately percent; BRICS countries use the largest share at approximately 45 percent; and ROW at percent. This breakdown of total freshwater withdrawals is shown by country in the chart over the period from In , India had the largest freshwater withdrawals at over billion cubic metres per year. Levels of water use vary significantly across the world.

At APEC, we strive to provide the best drinking water available to everyone. Even if it means offering a free system to those in need. Water is a vital element in each of our lives. Not only is it essential to our health, but also we use it for numerous household tasks. Every day we use water for cooking, bathing, cleaning, and drinking; but how often do we think about its source?

Water Sources

Community water systems obtain water from two sources: surface water and ground water. People use surface and ground water every day for a variety of purposes, including drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene, in addition to recreational, agricultural, and industrial activities. This is because large, well-populated metropolitan areas tend to rely on surface water supplies, whereas small, rural areas tend to rely on ground water. Surface water is water that collects on the ground or in a stream, river, lake, reservoir, or ocean. Surface water is constantly replenished through precipitation, and lost through evaporation and seepage into ground water supplies. Even though most community drinking water especially from surface water sources is treated before entering the home, the cost of this treatment and the risks to public health can be reduced by protecting source water from contamination.

Water resources are natural resources of water that are potentially useful. Uses of water include agricultural , industrial , household , recreational and environmental activities. All living things require water to grow and reproduce. Fresh water is a renewable resource , yet the world's supply of groundwater is steadily decreasing, with depletion occurring most prominently in Asia, South America and North America, although it is still unclear how much natural renewal balances this usage, and whether ecosystems are threatened. Surface water is water in a river, lake or fresh water wetland. Surface water is naturally replenished by precipitation and naturally lost through discharge to the oceans , evaporation , evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge.

PDF | With 70 percent of the earth's surface covered in water, how could we ever that 86 percent of water use came from freshwater sources.

The conventional freshwater sources now available in the region are barely sufficient to maintain the study area's current quality of life and economy. Attempting to meet future regional demands by simply increasing withdrawals of surface and ground water will result in further unsustainable development, with depletion of freshwater resources and widespread environmental degradation. Because these conditions already exist in many parts of the study area, for example in the Azraq Basin and the Hula Valley, as described in Chapter 4 , the reality of a constrained water supply must be considered in formulating government economic plans and policies.

Water is a valuable natural resource that is found in different forms in the environment. It is important to understand how water moves through the environment so that we can understand how to manage it successfully. Fresh water is finite and vulnerable. Supplying sufficient clean, fresh water is one of the most vital natural resource issues facing humanity.

All life on Earth depends on water. Human uses include drinking, bathing, crop irrigation, electricity generation, and industrial activity. For some of these uses, the available water requires treatment prior to use.
