The physical and chemical properties of water make subaqueous volcanic eruptions significantly different from similar eruptions occurring in subaerial environments. Processes like magma fragmentation, transport and deposition are controlled by a number of parameters that are different for water and air. Water density, heat capacity of water and water depth, among many others, provide distinctive features to subaqueous eruptions. Instability and mass wasting of subaqueous volcanoes and remobilization of volcanic deposits are common processes of syn-eruptive and post-eruptive scenarios. Field-based research on subaqueous volcanism has been traditionally undertaken by the study of ancient volcanic successions.

Subaqueous Volcanism, from Ancient Successions to Modern Volcanoes and Modelling
Syahreza S. Department of Geological Engineering, Universitas Pertamina. Tangkuban Parahu Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in West Java, Indonesia, although most of the recent eruptions were relatively mild e. However, there is still little information from the volcanic products in the proximal area. Here, a new documentation from the proximal volcanic succession is provided, including tephra-stratigraphy, componentry analysis, and petrography of volcanic products. Detailed mapping of the proximal area shows that the volcanic products are predominantly composed of alternating fine-clay and coarse ash, lapilli tuff, and pyroclastic breccia within ten tephra units. Componentry of ash particles revealed the presence of five components, associated with hydrothermally altered lithics, oxidized lithics, coherent crystalline lithics, magmatic juvenile, and free crystal in entire eruptive products.

Detailed facies analysis of the Mount Windsor Formation and Trooper Creek Formation, between Coronation homestead and Trooper Creek prospect approximately 15 km strike length , has clarified the facies architecture in this part of the Seventy Mile Range Group. The rocks have been affected by regional greenschist facies metamorphism and deformation, and hydrothermal alteration is intense around VHMS deposits. The Mount Windsor Formation comprises associations of rhyolitic to dacitic autoclastic breccia and coherent facies, m thick, which form submarine lavas, domes and syn-volcanic intrusions. The new stratigraphic scheme is based on mappable compositional and lithological variations which reflect changing provenance. The Kitchenrock Hill Member m thick includes rhyolitic to dacitic syn- and posteruptive volcaniclastic facies, minor syn-sedimentary intrusions and rare siltstone units.
Volcanoes represent complex geological systems capable of generating many dangerous phenomena. To evaluate and manage volcanic risk, we need first to assess volcanic hazard i. This requires acquisition of all relevant geological and geophysical information, such as stratigraphic studies, geological mapping, sedimentological studies, petrologic studies, and structural studies. All this information is then used to elaborate eruption scenarios and hazard maps. Stratigraphic studies represent the main tool for the reconstruction of past activity of volcanoes over time periods exceeding their historical record.
One of our aims in the book is to provide geologists with a sound basis for making their own well founded interpretations. For that reason we cover not only concepts about processes, and the nature of the products, but also methods and approaches that may be useful in analysing both modern and ancient successions.

One of our aims in the book is to provide geologists with a sound basis for making their own well founded interpretations. For that reason we cover not only concepts about processes, and the nature of the products, but also methods and approaches that may be useful in analysing both modern and ancient successions. Most importantly, we treat the diversity of products in volcanic terrains as facies, and we use the method of facies analysis and interpretation as a means of constructing facies models for different volcanic settings. These models will, we hope, be useful as norms for comparison for workers in ancient terrains.
