Radio Wave Propagation
Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum longer than infrared light. Radio waves have frequencies as high as gigahertz GHz to as low as 30 hertz Hz. Like all electromagnetic waves, radio waves travel at the speed of light in vacuum and close to the speed of light in the Earth's atmosphere. Radio waves are generated by charged particles undergoing acceleration , such as time-varying electric currents. Radio waves are generated artificially by transmitters and received by radio receivers , using antennas.

There are countless ways for radio signals to travel from transmitter to receiver, and understanding how radio waves interact with their environment is an important factor in successful radio communications. While amateurs can maximize station performance and reliability with the right equipment, knowledge and skill, we cannot control propagation. Through scientific exploration and experimentation, we can improve our understanding of propagation and how it affects radio signals. Propagation and Radio Science presents a comprehensive overview of one of the most fascinating and rewarding activities in Amateur Radio.
The steering committee has been working hard to provide you with an exciting technical conference and social program unlike any that our societies have had previously. We are arranging the events to facilitate outstanding opportunities for teaching, learning, and networking in the fields of antennas and propagation, as well as some fun. We hope that you will plan now to both participate in the conference and bring your families to this exciting Caribbean destination. However, for the first time in the history of the joint conference, the meeting will be held in IEEE Region 9, which encompasses Latin America and the Caribbean countries. Puerto Rico is especially important in the history of Antennas and Propagation with the presence of the Arecibo Observatory, the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescope. Arecibo and Region 9 will be an important focus during the conference. Moreover, the traditional aspects of world-class research, outstanding short courses, and the opportunity to interact with the world's leading experts in antennas and propagation from academia, industry, and government will be as strong as ever.
However radio signals are affected by the medium in which they travel and this can affect the radio propagation or RF propagation and the distances over which the signals can propagate. Some radio signals can travel or propagate around the globe, whereas other radio signals may only propagate over much shorter distances. Radio propagation, or the way in which radio signals travel can be an interesting topic to study. RF propagation is a particularly important topic for any radio communications system. The radio propagation will depend on many factors, and the choice of the radio frequency will determine many aspects of radio propagation for the radio communications system. Accordingly it is often necessary to have a good understanding of what is radio propagation, its principles, and the different forms to understand how a radio communications system will work, and to choose the best radio frequencies.

The Newsletter is published now and then and is distributed by e-mail. It allows more informal communication with URSI scientists. Emphasis lies on non-specialised contributions that are oriented towards the radioscientist community. The Radio Science Bulletin also contains items of information concerning the activities of URSI; such as notices relating to past and future scientific symposia, announcements about the activities of the Board of Officers and the Scientific Commissions and the Working Groups of URSI, reports on relevant decisions of other ICSU organisations, as well as book reviews, and historical articles of interest to radioscientists.
The technical sessions, workshops, and short courses will be coordinated between the two organizations to provide a comprehensive and well-balanced program. This meeting is intended to provide an international forum for the exchange of information on state-of-theart research in antennas, propagation, electromagnetic engineering, and radio science. Suggested topics and general information are listed on the Web site. In addition to regularly scheduled sessions for oral and poster presentations, there will be a student paper competition, as well as special sessions, workshops, and short courses that will address timely topics and state-of-the-art advancements in these fields. Eligible entries in the Student Paper Competition must have only one student author, and that student must be the first author.
