Williams' most popular work, A Streetcar Named Desire is considered one of the finest and most critically acclaimed plays of the twentieth century. After the loss of her family home to creditors, Blanche DuBois travels from the small town of Laurel, Mississippi , to the New Orleans French Quarter to live with her younger married sister, Stella , and Stella's husband, Stanley Kowalski. Blanche is in her thirties and, with no money, has nowhere else to go.

We cannot deny the fact that Stanley Kowalski is a fascinating character. The usual reaction is to see him as a brute because of the way that he treats the delicate Blanche.

Blanche is not able to have a sexual relationship anymore and cannot understand the sexual connection between Stella and Stanley. But when he gets to know that she had affairs with strangers and with one of her students in the past, he is not willing to marry her anymore. This term- paper deals with the role of sexuality in "A Streetcar named Desire". When she visits her sister Stella, she decides that she would like to marry Mitch, but not because she feels attracted by him. She is of the opinion that it is time that she finds someone with whom she can live until the end of her life and who looks after her.

Blanche and Stella demonstrate two different types of femininity in the play, yet both find themselves dependent on men. Both Blanche and Stella define themselves in terms of the men in their lives, and they see relationships with men as the only avenue for happiness and fulfillment. She performs a delicate, innocent version of femininity because she believes that this makes her most attractive to men. Blanche insists that Stella should attempt to get away from the physically abusive Stanley, but her solution also involves dependence on men, as she proposes that they contact the Dallas millionaire Shep Huntleigh for financial assistance. Blanche views Mitch as a refuge and a way to rejuvenate her shattered life. She does not try to hide who she is nor hide from her present circumstances.

Blanche the Aesthete: A Kierkegaardan Reading of a Streetcar Named Desire

With her fictional past as a teacher of American literature and her former social conditions like the Old South traditions Blanche could be every human being transferring to another culture with different social and traditional backgrounds and customs she has to cope with. And still in today's society it could happen that someone is suddenly confronted with totally new and different values he has to adapt to. Or at least conforming his old values when he seeks for acceptation in his new environment. And after all that is what Blanche DuBois is looking for in this drama. Under looking at the plot of the drama and several secondary sources I want to proof that the course of A Streetcar Named Desire not necessarily had to be decline and fall but rather rescue of Blanche DuBois.

Even though Stanley hits her, she is not in something she wants to get out of, as she explains to Blanche.

Blanche DuBois appears in the first scene dressed in white, the symbol of purity and innocence. She is seen as a moth-like creature. She is delicate, refined, and sensitive. She is cultured and intelligent. She can't stand a vulgar remark or a vulgar action.

Buenas noches, -

Eh. - Una nina? - повторил Беккер.  - Pelo rojo, azul, y bianco.
