This book aims to present a unified account of the physics of atoms and molecules from a modern viewpoint. It is based on courses given by the authors at Middle East Technical University, Ankara and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, and is suitable for study at third and fourth year levels of an undergraduate course. Students should be able to read this volume and understand its contents without the need to supplement it by referring to more detailed discussions. Precise phase coherence among successive ultrashort pulses of a frequency comb allows one to probe fast dynamics in the time domain and high-resolution structural information in the frequency domain for both atoms and molecules. It is hoped that the presentation of the last named will give readers a feeling that physics research can be full of adventure and surprises. Atomic and molecular physics underlie a basis for our knowledge of fundamental processes in nature and technology and in such applications as solid state physics, chemistry and biology. The present status of the field is discussed in relation to the detailed cross sections and rate coefficients that are needed for understanding laboratory or astrophysical plasmas. As the students progress through the book, their ability to use these tools will steadily increase, along with their confidence in their efficacy. This book contains information on many AMO subfields and can be used as a textbook for graduate students interested in entering AMO physics.

This inaugural lecture can obviously not cover all the spectacular breakthroughs in atomic and molecular physics since Recognizing that all matter is formed from an aggregate of elementary units called atoms, which mutually attract one another and are in a constant motion of agitation, clarified our view of the world. Although atoms are too small to be directly perceivable by us, their existence makes it possible to interpret, very simply, phenomena as diverse as heat, the behaviour of gases, the fusion of solids, chemical reactions, and so on. And the same atoms are found in an inert rock, a flower, a human being, and a distant star, etc. When physicists began to explore the world of atoms more precisely, as they endeavoured to understand its structure and the laws governing its behaviour, they soon encountered serious difficulties.
The Fundamentals of Atomic and Molecular Physics is intended as an introduction to the field for advanced undergraduates who have taken quantum mechanics. Each chapter builds upon the previous, using the same tools and methods throughout. As the students progress through the book, their ability to use these tools will steadily increase, along with their confidence in their efficacy.
