This article is published with open access at Springerlink. Abstract An experimental investigation of droplets impinging vertically on a deep liquid pool of the same fluid was conducted. Coalescence and jetting as two of the main regimes were identified and studied. Except for the experimental run of n-pentane, which was carried out in n-pentane saturated vapor, the ambient gas for the other experiments was air. The impact processes of micro-level diameter below 1 mm droplets were captured using a high-speed camera with a backlight. The observations, velocity and diameter ranges of the experimental runs were described, and based on them, the effects of the liquid-phase properties were studied.

Drop impacting on a liquid film with a finite thickness is omnipresent in nature and plays a critical role in numerous industrial processes. The impact can result in either bouncing or merging, which is mainly controlled by the impact inertia of the drop and film thickness. Although it is known that impact with inertia beyond a critical value on a thick film promotes merging through the breakage of the interfacial gas layer, here we demonstrate that for an impact inertia less than that critical value, increasing the film thickness leads to a nonmonotonic transition from merging to bouncing to merging and finally to bouncing again.

The oblique impact of a liquid droplet onto a deep liquid pool is studied numerically with the adaptive volume-of-fluid solver Basilisk. The splashing threshold, cavity formation, cavity evolution and the maximum cavity dimensions are quantified as a function of the Weber number and the impact angle. We compare the numerical results with recent experimental work by Gielen et al. Fluids 2 , ]. Similarly to the experimental results, three different impact regimes are observed: deposition of the droplet onto the pool, single-sided splashing in the direction of the impact and splashing in all directions.
