In numerical analysis , finite-difference methods FDM are a class of numerical techniques for solving differential equations by approximating derivatives with finite differences. Both the spatial domain and time interval if applicable are discretized , or broken into a finite number of steps, and the value of the solution at these discrete points is approximated by solving algebraic equations containing finite differences and values from nearby points. Finite difference methods convert ordinary differential equations ODE or partial differential equations PDE , which may be nonlinear , into a system of linear equations that can be solved by matrix algebra techniques.

Basically, Stochastic Alternating Direction Explicit SADE finite difference schemes for solving stochastic time dependent advection-diffusion and diffusion equations are represented and the main properties of these stochastic numerical methods, e. In particular, it is proved that when stable alternating direction explicit schemes for solving linear parabolic PDEs are developed to the stochastic case, they retain their unconditional stability properties applying to stochastic advection-diffusion and diffusion SPDEs.

Purpose of the presentation : 1 You will get experience in presenting the results of a project to an audience you can present in Norwegian or in English as you prefer, but if you speak English everybody will be able to understand you. We will ask to each group how they experienced the collaboration with the other members of group. Information about the project presentation : The presentations will take place in H1 Tuesday 1.
April and in R3 Wednesday 2. Each group will have 15 min at their disposal divided as follows: 9 min for the presentation, 4 min for questions, 2 min for changing to the next group. Please make sure you hold the time. Please show up at sharp on Tuesday and at sharp on Wednesday to avoid time problems this is very important especially on Wednesday, as we will have to leave R3 at This is crucial for the first two groups on the list see list here.
Prepare a pdf file of your presentation and send it to us Tuesday at the latest. We will put all files on a laptop which you will use for your the presentation. I have made a presentation schedule here. Please let me know if there is someone missing, or something wrong.
On Wednesday 26th I will be in my office from to and you can come to ask questions about the project. I'll have lunch and a meeting between If some important meetings come up I'll let you know, watch this space. After the presentation of the project, those who need more time to finalize their report can get it upon request maximum one week. Please send a message about it to Elena or to Anders. MathOverflow is a question and answer site for professional mathematicians. It only takes a minute to sign up. By theoretical emphasis I mean that I care about theorems i. A non-modern late s example of the sort of review I'm looking for is O. Ladyzenskaja's "The Method of Finite Differences in the theory of partial differential equations". More broadly, modern reviews on other discrete schemes for solving PDEs are also welcome, provided the reviews are theoretical in nature in the sense defined above. Finite Difference Schemes and Partial Differential Equations, Second Edition
Finite difference schemes are widely used in applied mathematics to numerically solve partial differential equations. However, for a given solution scheme, it is usually difficult to evaluate the quality of the underlying finite difference approximation with respect to the inheritance of algebraic properties of the differential problem under consideration. In this paper, we present an appropriate quality criterion of strong consistency for finite difference approximations to systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. This property strengthens the standard requirement of consistency of difference equations with differential ones. This allows for the evaluation and construction of solution schemes that preserve some fundamental algebraic properties of the system at the discrete level.
